Birth: Keeping it natural

So on occasion, I have clients who have been coming to a birth center for a "natural" experience, but then at the end of the pregnancy when they are getting cranky and crampy (I call this PLS, much like PMS), they want me "to do" something..."make it happen" or say "can't you give me something natural to make labor start??". Yes, I can...but then, are we really staying "natural"? Just because it is an herb doesn't necessarily make it what your body needs right now. I can give a woman some herbs to make them have contractions. This is called an induction. The same ladies who protest vehemently against going to a hospital for a drug induced labor induction will ask for something "natural". What is your body preparing to do?? It is preparing to go into labor "naturally"! Why not give your body the benefit of the doubt and wait and let it happen (I know how hard this is, been there, done that myself!).But pay attention here: Your body IS doing it. You are getting crampy. Your vaginal discharge is changing. your breasts are getting achy. Your back aches more. You feel like you are about to begin your cycle. These are the signs that your body is getting ready and your hormone levels are increasing naturally...without any type of help. I also want to remind you that almost every commercial and synthetic medication was based on a natural herb! Valium (valerian), Aspirin (white willow bark), ect. Just becasue it is natural does not mean that we know exactly how your body will react to a medication...and just because it is natural or an herb does not make it less of a medication. Look at the profound effect marijuana herb has when smoked or ingested! My point is, lets let the body do what it needs to do first before we go messing with the system...have some patience, and some faith. You got pregnant without any natural remedies, right??
